Tea Leaf Reading
Divining fortune from tea leaves has been around for almost as long as there has been tea, over five thousand years. Tea-Leaf reading which is also known as Tasseomancy like any other divination art has multiple origin histories. Some claim it began in China where Chinese would read the dredges of their cups for symbols, omens and patterns. While others believe that the present day Tea-Leaf reading originated in tea-drinking nations of Asia and the Middle East and taken to UK. In Victorian times Tea-Leaf reading was an ever popular parlour game.
Tea-Leaf reading tells fortunes using the symbols and the patterns formed by the residue of tea left in the cup. Typically, the tea is drunk in a light coloured, wide mouth cup with a handle a wide brim and a matching saucer. The ritual observed is very simple. A pot tea of loose tea leaves, brewed especially for the seeker, is drunk so as to leave a small amount of the drink in the cup. It is then taken in the left hand, rim upwards, swirled and inverted into the sauce pan. The patterns and symbols formed in the cup reveal the seeker’s fortune.
More of an art rather than a science, there are no universal guidelines that dictate what the patterns mean. This makes Tea-leaf reading one of the most creative and intuitive forms of divination and much is determined on the seer. Tea-Leaf reading is mostly done as a daily reading about life, love, work and money issues, though a longer timeframe may be determined as well.
The residual Tea-Leaf forming patterns represent aspects of our life, and every symbol has a very specific interpretation. Each of these possesses signs that are indication of what Destiny has in store for the seeker. The cup also reveals various ominous signs such as a serpent or an owl.
Unfortunately, Tea-Leaf reading is still classed as an art of the gypsies or one that is typically performed at home, leaving much to the judgement of scepticism.
